Tak Yan Yeung | Pianist | Educator

Combining discussion with performance in presenting lesser-known piano works with rich cultural contents is one of my main directions in promoting classical music.

Performing
Performing is the most direct way for me to bring music to the world, as each performance is a culmination of my study of and reflections on the pieces that I am performing at that particular moment in the sincerest manner.  Each performance is a unique experience, as the music is different most of the time, and the audience are also always different.  Bringing different music to audience from a variety of backgrounds is what makes the sharing of music always exciting.

Research
My research interest is exoticism and cultural appropriation in Western classical music.  From an interdisciplinary perspective, my studies reveal how the perception of a foreign culture can be made manifest in music.  Such a link also constitutes the focus of my promotion of classical music.  Recently, I completed my doctoral project which explores Chinese inspiration in piano music by Western composers.  In the near future, I plan to give a series of lecture-recitals on the phenomenon of Chinese inspiration in Western classical music.
